3G growth offsets costs for China Unicom
Costa Rica’s telecoms regulator, Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) will not be able to
provide mobile number portability (MNP) when Movistar Costa Rica and Claro launch
commercial services later this year,
reports Inside Costa Rica. Sutel had planned to have MNP
available as soon as the current
wireless monopoly ended, however complications
relating to the distribution of costs has forced the watchdog to push
back the planned MNP service which it now expects to be delayed by up to a year. Maryleana Mendez, the president of Sutel, defended the actions of the regulator, pointing to the late introduction of MNP in Chile, which has had an open
wireless market for more than a decade
