Rebate recovery fees are often applied to accounts that are cancelled after a trial period ends. These are often separate from cancelation fees, as they apply to promotions or discounts given to users when they sign up. Essentially, the companies want to recoup the losses for anything they gave you for free, since you'll no longer be a customer. In general, you'll find them on annual plans that offer pro-rated refunds, or plans that have monthly payments but still require a year's commitment.
